Mr SINCLAIR(6.20) —The Opposition supports the motion. Indeed, the previous honourable member for Bendigo, Mr Bourchier, often argued that this work should be undertaken. As the present honourable member for Bendigo (Mr Brumby) has suggested, the work conditions at the School of Transport and Catering certainly have been such that not having air-conditioning is not conducive to learning nor to the main function of the school. The fact that the report has now been made to the Parliament is welcomed by the Opposition. As shadow Minister for Defence I recognise that this is one of those improvements to service conditions which certainly we on this side of the House very strongly endorse. Indeed, the whole of the improvement of work conditions for those in the Services was of concern to me as Minister. I am most concerned that there are so many other areas where, regrettably, it seems it will take a little while before the conditions available generally in the civilian work force can be extended to those in the Services. However, I trust that this can be done, subject to the provision of adequate funds and proper programming. We welcome this motion and endorse it.

Question resolved in the affirmative.
