(Question No. 1765)

Mr Bungey asked the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs, upon notice, on 9 April 1981:

(1) How many vehicles purchased by Australian residents whilst overseas have been imported into Australia at reduced rates of duty during the last three financial years.

(2) What was the amount of duty foregone by the Commonwealth Government in respect of these imports because of any concessions that may apply.

Mr Moore —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Separate figures for returning Australian residents are only available from 1 May 1979; the numbers are:

May-June 1979 131 July 1979-June 1980 2,316 July 1980-16 April 1981 742

Total 3,189 vehicles

Note: From 1 December 1978 the duty free concession for privately imported motor vehicles has been restricted to persons taking up permanent residence in Australia for the first time. Returning Australians who had purchased motor vehicles prior to 1 December 1978 are eligible for the duty free concession provided the conditions applicable prior to 1 December 1978 are complied with.
