8       Hours of meeting and routine of business—Variation

Leave refused : The Attorney-General (Senator Brandis) sought leave to move a motion to vary the order of the Senate of 30 November 2017 relating to the hours of meeting and routine of business ( see entry no. 10, 30 November 2017 ). An objection was raised and leave was not granted.

Suspension of standing orders : Senator Brandis, pursuant to contingent notice, moved—That so much of the standing orders be suspended as would prevent him moving a motion to provide for the consideration of a matter, namely a motion to provide that a motion to vary the order of the Senate of 30 November 2017 may be moved immediately and determined without amendment or debate.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Wong) moved the following amendment:

Omit “and determined without amendment or debate”.

Debate ensued.

Question—That the amendment be agreed to—put.
