MOTION OF CENSURE OF GOVERNMENT: Suspension of Standing Orders

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Button) moved-That so much of the Standing Orders be suspended as would prevent Senator Button moving a motion of censure of the Government.

Question-put and passed.

Senator Button thereupon moved-That the Senate censures the Government for its grave failure, and the failure of the Attorney-General and the Treasurer in particular, in the administration of legislation relating to criminal and civil offences against the tax laws resulting in multi-billion dollar frauds against the Commonwealth, and calls for the resignation of the Attorney-General and the Treasurer.

Debate ensued.

Ordered-That the debate be adjourned till a later hour of the day, and that Senator Walsh have leave to continue his speech on the resumption of the debate.
