Senator RUSTON (South AustraliaAssistant Minister for International Development and the Pacific) (11:50): I seek leave to make a short statement.

The PRESIDENT: Leave is granted for one minute.

Senator RUSTON: The Race Discrimination Commissioner has the role of promoting understanding and acceptance of and compliance with the Racial Discrimination Act, promoting understanding, tolerance and friendship among all Australians, including racial and ethnic groups, and of leading the Australian Human Rights Commission's work for all Australians. The government is actively considering applicants for the position of Race Discrimination Commissioner in order to ensure that these roles and the benefits of the position are realised for all Australians.
