Senator LUNDY (Australian Capital TerritoryMinister Assisting for Industry and Innovation, Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Minister for Sport) (18:59): No, the legislation relates to those arriving as irregular maritime arrivals and by boat, our motivation being the saving of lives of people who would otherwise be motivated to undertake perilous journeys that we know can result in death and tragedy. That objective is a worthy one. The primary motivation on a humanitarian basis is to resolve a very difficult problem that Australia has been trying to manage, and we do not resile from that. This is about saving the lives of those who seek to undertake a dangerous journey by boat to Australia.
