Senator ELLISON (Minister for Justice and Customs) (3:02 PM) —Senator Allison asked me a question during question time in relation to the management of nuclear waste, which is the responsibility of the minister for science. I am advised that the government has embarked upon a detailed process to determine a location for the Commonwealth's co-located waste management facility. The initial step in this process will involve identification of a site or sites which will be subject to further on-site investigation of their suitability. Whilst the government has a preference for an offshore site, both offshore and onshore siting options are being considered. This facility will be subject to a Commonwealth environmental assessment and will require regulatory approvals from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency. If there are any other details which have not been covered in that answer, I will get back to the Senate.
