Senator COONAN (Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts) (4:45 PM) —The government does not support the amendment for the reasons I outlined in my summing up speech. The government is seeking simply to reinforce marriage and its status and to give effect in legislation to what is the common legal understanding of marriage.
