Senator COULTER —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

    (i)the excellent and well-informed speech given by the Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories (Senator Faulkner) on 28 June 1994, and

    (ii)that the speech identified many of the matters of environmental concern requiring urgent attention;

  (b)recognises that the Minister's understanding and commitment to addressing the key issues raised by an accelerating environmental despoliation are not shared by his ministerial colleagues, nor by the Government;

  (c)specifically notes, as just one example, the placing of forests by the Prime Minister (Mr Keating) under the Minister for Resources (Mr Beddall) rather than the Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories, thus symbolising that forests have only a wood value and failing to recognise all the other values that forest represent; and

  (d)calls on the Keating Government to convincingly commit itself to the principle of ecologically sustainable development (ESD) and to urgently begin the task of implementing the many recommendations that it already has before it from ESD working groups, the Standing Committee on Industry, Science, Technology, Transport, Communications and Infrastructure report on greenhouse and many others.
