Senator CROWLEY —by leave—During question time today I indicated to the House in response to a question that expenditure on NHMRC research now stood at over $140 million. This was based on advice given to me by the department.

I am now advised that the figure of over $140 million refers to health and medical research in general, and that the figure for the National Health and Medical Research Council should be $125 million. This correction does not alter my earlier statement that this represents an increase of more than 100 per cent in real terms for the NHMRC since 1983, nor does it change the fact that the government's budgetary decisions provided further real new money increases to NHMRC, as I stated in my answer.
