Senator VALLENTINE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate —

  (a)notes that:

(i)11 November 1991 is Remembrance Day when we remember all those who have laid down their lives in war, with the date being derived from the end of the First World War, which was supposed to be the war to end all wars, and

(ii)increasingly, it is civilians who are dying in modern wars rather than soldiers, and that in the latest major conflict, the Gulf War, the United States actually made a profit to the tune of over a billion dollars, while that country and others like Australia do not adequately care for war veterans; and

(b)calls on the Government to commit itself to working for non-military alternatives to conflict resolution so that we may never again sacrifice lives to the false gods of war and that those who died may not have laid down their lives in vain.
