Senator COLSTON —I direct a question to the Minister representing the Minister for Transport and Communications. I refer to the announcement on 30 October by Mr Kim Beazley that public radio stations will soon be able to broadcast promotional sponsorship announcements. Could the Minister give an indication of when it is expected that public radio stations will be able to broadcast such announcements?

Senator COLLINS —The Minister for Transport and Communications has provided me with the following response to Senator Colston's question. For the majority of public broadcasting stations, the ability to broadcast promotional sponsorship announcements will be given effect in the Broadcasting Services Bill. This draft Bill, which was recently tabled, is now being circulated publicly for comment prior to its introduction next year.

In order to provide immediate relief for public radio stations in markets where there is no terrestrial commercial operator, the Minister has brought forward a minor amendment to section 119AB of the Broadcasting Act. This amendment will lift the prohibition on promotional sponsorship announcements contained in that section.
