Senator KILGARIFF —by leave-I present to the Senate the following petition, which is not in conformity with the Standing Orders, from 591 citizens requesting that the alliance between Australia and the United States be strengthened and that joint Australian and United States defence bases in Australia be supported:

To the Honourable, the Prime Minister, and members of the Federal Parliament:

We the undersigned citizens of Alice Springs and Australia support the Joint Defence Bases at Pine Gap and elsewhere in Australia and strongly oppose any attempts to close the said bases.

We believe the bases make a considerable contribution to world peace and stability and that they reduce the likelihood of nuclear war.

We urge the Federal Government to strengthen the alliances between the United States and Australia because we believe our mutual interest will be served by such a strong alliance and your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
