(Question No. 83)

Senator Jones asked the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, upon notice, on 20 March 1985:

(1) Is the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce aware of a regular practice adopted by some wholesalers, subsidised by the Federal Government under the petroleum freight subsidy scheme, of paying their drivers by the trip, and in one case forcing them to maintain average speeds of 75 kilometres per hour; if so, will the Minister consult with the Transport Workers Union of Australia (Queensland Branch), which identified this practice to obtain details with a view to removing offending companies from the subsidy scheme.

Senator Button —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) The points raised do not fall within the administration of the subsidy scheme. The enforcement of speed limits is the responsibility of the Queensland Government. See also my answers to Questions No. 80, 81 and 82.
