(Question No. 35)


Senator Puplick asked the Minister representing the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism, upon notice, on 22 February 1985:

(1) Has the Australian Tourist Commission ever collected data on the value to the Australian tourist industry of the Australian duty free shopping industry, both at on-airport and off-airport sites; if so:

(a) what is the estimated value to the Australian tourist industry of the duty free shopping industry in Australia, divided between the on- and off-airport sites;

(b) if this information is available, why has no reference to the value of the duty free industry to the Australian tourist industry in general ever been mentioned in the Annual Reports of the Australian Tourist Commission, including the Annual Report for 1983-84 which was recently presented; and

(c) if no such statistics have ever been sought or collated, why not.

(2) What discussions (if any) have ever taken place between the Australian Tourist Commission and representatives of the Australian duty free industry, such as the Australian Duty Free Operators Association; if no such discussions have ever been initiated by the Australian Tourist Commission, why not.


Senator Ryan —The Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) (a) and (b): The ATC has not collected this data.

(1) (c) Other activities have a higher priority.

(2) Frequent discussions are held with members of the Australian duty free industry to update material in the Commission's publications.
