Senator WALSH (Minister for Resources and Energy)(6.51) —I had almost finished speaking in the cognate debate on these taxation Bills before the suspension of the sitting for lunch. I wish to make only one other comment and that is in relation to Senator Jack Evans's suggestion that in order to overcome the resistance in the Senate to the passage of tax Bills which have retrospective clauses, he put what I think he called a challenge to the Government to call a double dissolution of the Parliament on those Bills. I shall pass that suggestion on to the Prime Minister (Mr Hawke) and seek his reaction to it. But I note for the record that one of the consequences of the Government's doing that is of course that it would be easier for Australian Democrat senators to be re-elected in a double dissolution than under a half Senate election. I thank the Senate for the indicated support by everybody for the passage of the Bills.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Bills read a second time.
