(Question No. 937)

Senator Peter Rae asked the Minister for Resources and Energy, upon notice, on 6 June 1984:

(1) Did two industrial scientists die in early November 1983 while taking water samples for Eraring power station's ashdam, as reported in Engineers' Australia of 11 November1983.

(2) What action has the Government taken to ascertain the events leading to these deaths.

(3) Was the cause of death a result of foul air from the coal-fired power station.

Senator Walsh —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) Yes.

(2) and (3) The Electricity Commission of New South Wales, which is responsible for the operation of the Eraring power station, has investigated this matter and further inquiries should be directed to the Commission.
