Senator MACKLIN(4.23) —I want to make only one comment on what Senator Harradine said. He said that it was not envisaged that the Electoral Commission would engage in providing information and education programs. This item arose from a recommendation of the Joint Select Committee on Electoral Reform, which in its report specifically envisaged that the Electoral Commission would engage in those activities. Indeed, considerable evidence was given to the Joint Committee on Electoral Reform that insufficient work had been done by the Electoral Office, partly because of budgetary constraints and other matters, to engage in information and education programs. So it was actually envisaged that the Commission would engage in precisely such activities.
