Senator GARETH EVANS (Attorney-General) —Yesterday Senator Crowley asked me about the detention of an Australian athlete, Mr Peter Parcell. The Minister for Foreign Affairs (Mr Hayden) has provided the following information: It is correct that Australian athlete Peter Parcell was refused permission to leave the Philippines by immigration authorities in Manila, reportedly because of a complaint lodged with them by an American citizen concerning the amount of money he claimed Mr Parcell owed him for telephone calls in the United States. In view of this unusual action the Australian Embassy in Manila made prompt oral and written presentations to the authorities and shortly thereafter Peter Parcell was allowed to depart the Philippines without further hindrance.
