Asylum Seekers

To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives.

This petition of citizens of Australia and other countries draws to the attention of the House the plight of 267 asylum seekers, including over 30 babies, in Australia for medical treatment, who are in danger of being sent back to dreadful conditions on Nauru. These people have done nothing wrong. They have fled untenable situations, and should not be incarcerated in cruel and unsanitary offshore detention facilities where their situation is one of despair and hopelessness and the children are traumatised.

We therefore ask the House:

to disallow any procedure that would return 267 asylum seekers, including over 30 babies, to Nauru,

ensure prompt processing of their refugee claims takes place in Australia.
