Human Rights

TO THE HONOURABLE THE SPEAKER AND MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES This petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the House to a political prisoner Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film maker serving 20 years prison sentence in the Russian Federation and currently under an indefinite hunger strike. Oleg Sentsov was arrested on trumped-up terrorism charges by Russian authorities in May 2014 in Crimea. The entire case against him was based on the testimony of two witnesses, one of whom subsequently recanted his initial statement as made "under duress". Sentsov also stated that he was tortured during the investigation period. Sentsov is considered to be a political prisoner by the Human Right Centre Memorial, Amnesty International, PEN International, and other humanitarian organization. On May 14th 2018, Sentsov commenced an indefinite hunger strike demanding to release all Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia. This put his health and life in serious danger. Statements in support of Oleg Sentsov during his hunger strike have been made by the Spokesperson of the European External Action Service, PEN International, European intellectuals and politics, and other concerned people and organizations. Defiantly, Oleg Sentsov continues a hunger strike.

We the undersigned ask the House of Representatives to raise a case for Sentsov in the Australian Parliament and in support of human rights instruct Federal diplomatic channels to support the immediate release of film producer Oleg Sentsov and all Ukrainian political prisoners held by the Russian Federation.
