Australian Broadcasting Corporation: iView

Dear Chair

Petition - EN0754 - ABC iView facility on TV ' s

Thank you for your letter of 26 November 2018 about a petition (EN0754) concerning the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

While the Australian Government provides an overall level of funding to the ABC, the ABC has legislated independence in relation to operational matters. Parliament has guaranteed this independence and as a consequence, internal ABC operational decisions are the responsibility of the ABC Board and Executive.

In 2018-19 the Government will provide the ABC over $1 billion in annual funding. This represents a substantial investment of public funds and will ensure that the ABC is able to continue to provide television, radio and digital media services in line with its Charter. The ABC has greater funding certainty than any other media organisation in the nation.

The ABC advises that it continually assesses the technologies that deliver iview and the cost to support devices, with the aim of providing iview to as many people as possible. This means, from time to time, decisions will be made to retire support for devices. These decisions consider the resources and cost to maintain support, the technologies and security features of the device, and how widely a device is used for accessing iview.

The ABC appreciate that decisions to retire support can be disappointing for members of the public. The ABC endeavours to provide clear and visible information and advance notice of decisions to retire support, in collaboration with device manufacturers.

The petitioners may wish to raise their concerns directly with the ABC, by writing to Audience and Consumer Affairs, GPO Box 9994, in their capital city, or by lodging a complaint at www.abc.ne.au/contact/complain.htm.This will ensure that the ABC is directly aware of their concerns and has had an opportunity to respond to them.

I trust this information will be of assistance to the Committee.

Yours sincerely

from the Minister for Communications and the Arts, Senator Fifield(Petition No. EN0754)
