Dear Mrs Wicks

Thank you for your correspondence concerning Standing Committee on Petitions - EN0674 - ban for single use straws.

The Coalition Government is providing national leadership through the Meeting of Environment Ministers. We have developed a new National Waste Policy and are now working on an action plan.

A key role of the Australian Government (the Government) in waste management is to coordinate national policy initiatives in partnership with state and territory governments and industry. As state, territory, and local governments are primarily responsible for litter management, the Government strongly supports and encourages jurisdictions to reduce litter and other wastes, including straws and other products made of plastics, to minimise their impact on the environment.

Actions to prevent and minimise common marine debris items such as straws are being undertaken by local governments across Australia. For example, Brisbane City Council has committed to banning plastic straws and Adelaide City Council will ban straws from events in Adelaide's central business district from 2019. The ACT Government has also implemented the Straws Suck campaign to help rid Canberra cafes and bars of single use plastic straws.

Industry is also taking action to ban straws. For example, McDonald's is phasing out plastic straws across Australia by 2020, Woolworths is committing to stop selling plastic straws by the end of 2018, Starbucks is eliminating plastic straws from its stores worldwide by 2020 and Coca Cola Australia have committed to replace plastic straws with paper.

Thank you again for writing to me on this matter.

Yours sincerely

from the Minister for the Environment, Ms Price(Petition No. EN0674)
