Foreign Affairs

Dear Chair

Thank you for your letter of 18 June 2018 regarding petition number PN0348 requesting Australia refrain from any changes to its nomenclature policy on the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia while negotiations are underway between the Governments in Athens and Skopje.

The Australian Government continues to use the nomenclature 'former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia'. Australia's policy strives to be impartial by using the terminology agreed in the United Nations by the disputing parties.

Australia congratulates Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on signing an historic agreement to recognise the name 'Republic of North Macedonia' on 17 June 2018. The agreement is a critical step toward resolving the nomenclature issue. Australia remains supportive of the resolution process, and urges the governments in Athens and Skopje to continue to work together.

The Australian Government will review its policy on the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia nomenclature when the governments in Athens and Skopje advise they have formally adopted the new name.

I trust this information is of assistance.

Yours sincerely

from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms Bishop
