Ivory Trade

Dear Mrs Wicks MP

I refer to your letter concerning a petition (EN0565) to the Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security, the Hon Angus Taylor MP. Your letter has been referred to me as the Assistant Minister for the Environment, as the matters raised fall within my portfolio responsibilities.

Australia is committed to tackling illegal wildlife trade. Australia has implemented strict controls for international trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn. Imports and exports of elephant ivory and rhino horn can only occur in very limited circumstances, such as for research or education purposes, or for vintage ivory taken before the species was listed under the Convention on international Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Australia's trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn is currently the subject of an inquiry by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Law Enforcement. This inquiry is also investigating Australia's domestic trade in these items. I welcome the inquiry and note that the Department of the Environment and Energy has provided a submission addressing its terms of reference. I look forward to receiving the report of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Law Enforcement in due course.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to the Government's attention.

Yours sincerely

from the Assistant Minister for the Environment, Ms Price
