Dear Mrs Wicks

Thank you for your correspondence concerning petition number EN0508 in relation to the Australian Government's proposed reforms to strengthen the requirements for Australian citizenship. Your correspondence has been referred to me as the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs.

The Government is committed to ensuring migrants are able to successfully integrate into the Australian community.

I note the petition relates to the proposed commencement date of the general residency requirement in the Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017 (the Bill). I should point out that the Government's legislation referred to in the petition is dated 2017, not 2018.

On 18 October 2017, the Government circulated amendments to the Bill, removing retrospectivity from the package of reforms.

As part of our commitment to ensuring migrants succeed in Australia, I have spent much of 2018 consulting with migrant and stakeholder groups across the country. I have listened to their feedback on what approach is best with regard to general residence requirements.

The Government notes the petition and its terms.

Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention.

Yours sincerely

from the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Mr Tudge
