Human Rights

Dear Mrs Wicks

Thank you for your letter of 25 June 2018 regarding petition PN0355 on the imprisonment of Mr Oleg Sentsov in the Russian Federation.

The Australian Government has joined a number of countries in raising its concern about Ukrainian citizens unlawfully detained by the Russian Federation. We have raised these concerns, including the situation of Mr Sentsov, in communication with the UN Secretary General, Mr Antonio Guterres. We have joined a number of countries in asking Mr Guterres to take up this issue with the Russian Federation.

The Government condemned Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea and continues to fully support Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We have consistently raised our concern about the human rights situation in Crimea, including through resolutions in the UN General Assembly. This was raised most recently through UNGA. Resolution 72/190 on the situation of human rights in Crimea. Australia maintains sanctions in response to the Russian threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

I trust this information is of assistance.

Yours sincerely

from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms Bishop
