Environment: Plastic Straws

Dear Mrs Wicks

Thank you for your letter concerning petition EN0564 presented to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Petitions, regarding banning plastic straws.

The Australian Government's The Threat Abatement Plan for the impacts of marine debris on vertebrate marine wildlife of Australia's coasts and oceans (2018) provides a coordinated national approach to the implementation of measures to prevent and mitigate the impacts of harmful marine debris on vertebrate marine life. The Australian Government, (the Government) through the Reef Trust, has also provided up to $5 million, over five years, for clean-up and prevention services to reduce marine debris in the Great Barrier Reef.

On 27 April 2018, all of Australia's environment ministers agreed to set a target that by 2025, or earlier, 100 per cent of Australian packaging will be recyclable, compostable or reusable. In addition, ministers endorsed the development of targets for the use of recycled content in packaging. Ministers also agreed to update the 2009 Waste Strategy by year end. These actions will help to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfill and as litter in the ocean.

While states and territories are primarily responsible for waste and litter management in their jurisdictions, the Government strongly supports and encourages jurisdictions to reduce litter and other wastes, including single-use plastics such as straws. Most state and territory governments have implemented, or will implement, single-use plastic bag bans and container deposit schemes. Major supermarkets in Australia have also banned single-use plastic bags, and have committed to removing plastic packaging on fruit and vegetables. Woolworth's supermarkets will also stop selling plastic straws by the end of 2018.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to this petition.

Yours sincerely

from the Assistant Minister for the Environment, Ms Price
