Mr Morrison asked the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, in writing, on 24 November 2008:

(1)   Is the first priority of the Major Cities Unit (MCU) to: (a) improve productivity by reducing urban congestion; and (b) ensure people and goods move efficiently across cities.

(2)   Does he agree that the expansion of freight operations at Port Kembla and Port Botany will place additional burden upon roads in the St George, Sutherland and Illawarra regions of Southern Sydney; if not, why not.

(3)   Will he direct the MCU to review the costs and benefits of connecting the Illawarra region and the Southern Freeway (F6) to the Sydney Orbital motorway network.

Mr Albanese (Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

(1)   The Major Cities unit will lead a whole of government response by the Commonwealth to contribute to outcomes that improve the liveability, productivity and sustainable development of the major cities in Australia.

(2)   The expansion of freight operation at Port Botany will benefit from the construction of the southern Sydney freight rail line.

(3)   The Sydney Orbital is not the responsibility of the Major Cities Unit.
