Mr SLIPPER (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance and Administration) (4:38 PM) —by leave—I move:

That, in accordance with the provisions of the Public Works Committee Act 1969, the following proposed work be referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works for consideration and report: Fitout of new leased premises for the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet at 1 National Circuit, Barton, ACT.

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet proposes to fit out new leased premises at 1 National Circuit, Barton, in the Australian Capital Territory. The increasing responsibilities of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet place higher demands on the current accommodation at 3-5 National Circuit. The current building does not provide adequate space and does not meet the required physical security standards for the department. The proposed building at 1 National Circuit will provide approximately 15,050 square metres of net lettable area over five floors and will accommodate the operational needs of the department.

The fit-out works will include the integration of services into the base building, including electrical, mechanical, communications, security, fire and hydraulic services; tenant fit-out above the base building to con-form with the operational requirements, including security; and architecturally designed office accommodation. Construction of the building is planned to commence in February 2005. Subject to parliamentary approval, the integrated fit-out is planned to commence in August 2005, with occupancy expected in early 2007. The estimated cost of the new proposal is $23 million. Payments for the fit-out are expected to be made in 2006-07. I commend the motion to the House.

Question agreed to.
