Mr Horne asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 21 October 1999:

(1) Is he able to say whether (a) requests have been made from the School of Infantry at Singleton to reopen Stockton Rifle Range near Newcastle and (b) the reopening of the range is necessary as a training venue to train the two and a half battalions proposed to be raised to enable rotation of Australian military forces in East Timor; if so, what are the details.

(2) If the Stockton Rifle Range is required for the purposes referred to in part (1) will he take immediate steps to remove control of the range from Defence Properties.

Mr Moore (Defence) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) (a) The School of Infantry has not made any request for the Stockton Rifle Range to be reopened.

(b) Stockton Rifle Range is not required to train Australian forces for rotation to East Timor.

(2) See response to part (1) above.
