Mr Martin asked the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 19 October 1999:

Does the Defence Housing Authority have houses that have been vacant for more than 3 months; if so, (a) how many, (b) in what geographical areas are the houses situated, (c) why are they vacant, (d) what is the estimated rental lost to the Commonwealth during the period the houses have been vacant and (e) what action has been taken to either tenant the houses or sell them.


Mr Bruce Scott (Veterans' Affairs; Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

Yes.

(a) 124 houses or 0.6% of total housing stock are vacant houses where rent is not being received.

(b) ACT (1), Brisbane (39), Cairns (4), Darwin (5), Hunter (4), Melbourne (2), Nowra (3), Perth (4), Riverina (2), Sydney (45), Katherine (4), Toowoomba (3), Townsville (8).

(c) Sold, awaiting removal (5)

(d) $720,631 (0.2% of total rent bill).

(e) Wherever possible, houses are leased pending sale. Houses are released for sale in a controlled manner so as not to distort local housing markets.
