Mr KERR (9:58 PM) —The consequential amendments that the government will be moving will certainly address a large number of issues appropriately. I quite understand the necessity, given the interaction between the amendments that the government is now moving and the provisions that I have circulated. It will formally oppose the amendments that we have urged in this instance. We will take that no further. The sum of the amendments now will address the total issue in relation to the Timor Gap arrangements.

Might I say one of the ironies of political life is that, notwithstanding all that has been said, I have just received a note that I have an engagement to meet with Senator Vanstone's office in our office to discuss amendments to the National Crime Authority Amendment Bill 1999 as soon as the debate on this bill concludes. It says `Regrettably, the minister is unable to join us.' Perhaps it is just as well in the circumstances.

Amendments negatived.
