Mr MARTYN EVANS (11:12 AM) —by leave—I move:

(1) Schedule 1, before item 1, page 3 (line 4), insert:

1A Subsection 4(1) Table A

Item dealing with James Cook University of North Queensland, omit "of North Queensland".

(2) Schedule 1, before item 1, page 3 (line 4), insert:

1B Subsection 4(1) Table A

After the item dealing with University Southern Queensland, insert:

"University of the Sunshine Coast"

These amendments, while on the face of it not matters of great substance, do assist individual universities, namely the James Cook University of North Queensland and the University of the Sunshine Coast, in ensuring that they are able to participate directly in the higher education process—in the case of the University of the Sunshine Coast by receiving funding directly from the Commonwealth. Since this is a university newly established by the Queensland parliament, it unfortunately has not been able to receive its funding directly because of the gap in the legislative process caused by the government's VSU bill being stalled in the Senate. The amendment regarding the James Cook University goes to a small alteration to its name which is necessary for procedural reasons. I seek the support of the House.
