Mrs Crosio asked the Minister for Sport and Tourism, upon notice, on 18 November 1997:

(1) Has he or his representative had discussions, formal or otherwise, with a representative of the German government regarding Australia's participation in the Expo 2000 World Trade Fair in Hanover, Germany; if so, (a) what was the nature of the discussions and (b) were undertakings concerning Australia's participation given; if so, what undertakings.

(2) Has he or his representative given an assurance to a representative of the German government that Australia would participate in Expo 2000.

(3) Has he made personal representations to (a) the Prime Minister or (b) the Treasurer to seek the funds needed to establish an Australian pavilion at the Expo 2000; if so, what was the outcome; if not, why not.


Mr Andrew Thomson (Sport and Tourism;Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Sydney 2000 Games) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) (a) The Minister for Industry, Science and Tourism and officers of the Department of Industry, Science and Tourism met with representatives of the German government to discuss the German interest in securing Australia's participation in Expo 2000.

(b) The only undertaking given was to consider the representations.

(2) The Prime Minister announced on 1 December 1997 that Australia would participate in Expo 2000.

(3) No; the issue was in hand.
