Mr SPEAKER —I have received a letter from the honourable member for Bennelong (Mr Howard) proposing that a definite matter of public importance be submitted to the House for discussion, namely:

The continuing erosion of Loan Council standards under the Keating Government.

Order! The honourable member for Bennelong might resume his seat for a moment. Let us not be too hasty here today. The honourable for Higgins will resume his seat.

Mr Costello—I didn't want to sit down and get up again.

Mr SPEAKER —Exercise is probably good for the soul of the honourable member for Higgins. I call upon those members who approve of the proposed discussion to rise in their places.

More than the number of members required by the Standing Orders having risen in their places—

Motion (by Mr Beazley) agreed to:

That the business of the day be called on.
