Mr HOWARD —I ask the Prime Minister to give an assurance to the House that the proceeds of his Government's planned sale of public assets will be used to reduce our accumulated debt and not to finance current consumption.

Mr HAWKE —The details of the Government's budgetary strategy will be made quite clear both in the May statement and in the Budget. I have no intention of entering into any interchange with the Leader of the Opposition on this issue. The strategy will be made clear. The point and purpose will be made clear. I simply make the point that this Government is more than happy to stand on its record of budgetary achievement against the fiscal irresponsibility and irrelevance of the Leader of the Opposition when he was Treasurer.
