Mr HURFORD (Minister for Housing and Construction)(5.16) —I move:

That, in accordance with the provision of the Public Works Committee Act 1969, it is expedient to carry out the following proposed work which was referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works and on which the committee has duly reported to Parliament: Australian Wheat Board accommodation at Ceres House, 528 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, for Head Office and Victorian Branch.

This proposal is for extensive renovation of Ceres House and the addition of five floors to enable the accommodation needs of the Australian Wheat Board's head office and its Victorian branch office to be met on the one site. The refurbished building will then comprise eight levels of accommodation, a semi- basement car park and utilities area and a roof level plant room. Laboratory facilities for quality monitoring will be included. The Joint Committee on Public Works reported that there is a need to provide accommodation for the head office, Victorian branch and quality monitoring facilities of the Australian Wheat Board.

The Committee also concluded that redevelopment of Ceres House is the best of a number of options considered to satisfy the Board's accommodation needs. It noted that co-location of the head office and the Victorian branch should result in increased efficiency, including sharing of facilities and services. The Committee recommended construction of the work at an estimated cost of $7.17m at June 1983 prices. If the House agrees to support this motion, planning can proceed in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee. I commend the motion to the House.

Question resolved in the affirmative.
