Question No. 549

Mr Ruddock asked the Minister for Health, upon notice, on 21 September 1983:

(1) Is it the intention of the Government to establish a radiation ordinance for the Australian Capital Territory; if so, have drafting instructions for an ordinance been completed.

(2) By what date is it anticipated that (a) a draft ordinance will be submitted to the Australian Capital Territory House of Assembly and (b) the ordinance will be proclaimed.

Dr Blewett —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) and (2) It is the intention of the Government to introduce a radiation ordinance for the Australian Capital Territory. A draft ordinance has been considered and approved in principle by the Australian Capital Territory House of Assembly. Some minor formal alterations to the draft are still required but it is not anticipated that these will cause any difficulties. It is envisaged that subject to the approval of the Executive Council the ordinance will be made and gazetted by the end of November this year.
