Question No. 487

Mr Blanchard asked the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, upon notice , on 13 September 1983:

What is the average period of time between notification to an individual that his/her application to immigrate to Australia has been accepted and the subsequent arrival in Australia of that immigrant.

Mr West —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

Applicants for migration to Australia who are approved on the basis of their occupation (including employer nominees) and in family migration categories where employment is a major factor are required to arrive in Australia within six months of their approval. For applicants in other categories, approval is valid for twelve months from the date of radiological clearance. Very few requests for extension of approval are received, and the large majority of approved applicants arrive in Australia within the time originally approved.
