Question No. 89

Mr McVeigh asked the Treasurer, upon notice, on 4 May 1983:

(1) Has the Government established its promised land ownership register to monitor the degree of foreign ownership of farmland; if not, (a) when will it be established and operational, (b) how many personnel will be appointed to operate the register and (c) precisely how will the register function.

(2) How will the register establish the existing degree of foreign ownership of farmland.

Mr Keating —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) and (2) As I indicated in the House on 5 May, the Government is conducting a review of foreign investment policy. The possible establishment of a register of foreign ownership of rural land is being examined as part of that review.
