Dr BLEWETT (Minister for Health)(1.12 a.m.) —The new clause 49 does not exclude the Minister from consulting with the Australian Medical Association. It removes the requirement that the only medical body to be consulted in relation to the Medical Benefits Advisory Committee should be named as the AMA. We believe that in the pluralism which is now characteristic of the medical profession it is inappropriate that only one body should be named as the required body with which the Government should consult. It is certainly not my intention to preclude consultation with the AMA but that clause leaves it open for the Government to consult with other bodies as well.
