(Question No. 474)

Mr Latham asked the Treasurer, upon notice, on 25 June 1996:

(1) What decision has the Government made on the single desk marketing arrangements for wheat.

(2) How is the decision consistent with the principles and processes governing national competition policies.

Mr Costello —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) The Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, Mr John Anderson MP, has portfolio responsibility for the Australian Wheat Board (AWB) and is best placed to outline the Government's policy on the single desk marketing arrangements.

(2) The Wheat Marketing Act 1989, which provides for the single desk export powers of the AWB, is included on the Commonwealth's Legislation Review Schedule and is to be reviewed in 1999-2000. The inclusion of the Wheat Marketing Act 1989 on the review Schedule meets the requirement of the Competition Principles Agreement signed by the Commonwealth and all State and Territory Governments in April 1995.
