McEwen Electorate

Mr MITCHELL (McEwenSecond Deputy Speaker) (14:43): My question is to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development. I refer to the more than $906,000 in funding granted by the former government to the City of Whittlesea for the Church Street redevelopment, Woodland Waters Recreation Reserve development and the Lalor Tennis Club redevelopment. Why is the government ignoring the needs of the people of McEwen with its cuts and forcing them to face the Abbott axe?

Mr TRUSS (Wide BayDeputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development) (14:44): The Abbott government is not ignoring the people of McEwen; it is giving them a carbon tax free future. It is giving their industry a chance to be competitive with industry in the rest of the world. We are providing services and facilities, through our roads and infrastructure program, that Labor had never committed to. The people of Australia looked at the program that Labor offered to them during the election campaign, they looked at the program that the coalition offered to them during the election campaign, and they chose the program put forward by the coalition. The people have had their say and we are now getting on with the process of delivering the promises that we made to the Australian people, and that will be our task over the next three years.
