Katrina Falkner: Well thank you for coming today. We’d very much like to welcome Mr Pyne and Mr Birmingham for coming and helping us announce the fantastic funding initiative that they are supporting us with. Over the past 18 21/01/2016 Press conference  University of Adelaide MOOC | Ministers' Media Centre, Australian Government https://ministers.education.gov.au/birmingham/pressconferenceuniversityadelaidemooc 2/7 months we’ve been running an open, free online course for teachers, for primary school teachers across Australia to help them prepare for the new digital technologies curriculum, which is going to be critical for innovation in Australia. We’ve had about 5000 teachers through the course so far, which has been fantastic, but what we’ve found is that teachers really are able to cope well when they have a face to face community to help them go through the course materials. And that’s what this program is going to help us achieve. It will help us build communities for teachers to be able to learn computer science, to learn computational thinking, and will also help us establish a lending library of stateofthe art digital technologies that we can basically lend out to every school in Australia, which means that any school is able to access the best technology to educate our students. Christopher Pyne: Excellent. Simon Birmingham: Thanks Katrina, and thanks so much for having us along here today. This really is a great example of the Federal Government seeking to back innovation at the University of Adelaide to enhance innovation right across Australia’s school system. Because what we’re doing today is committing $6.9 million out of the National Innovation and Science Agenda to help the University of Adelaide expand this open access program, 21/01/2016 Press conference  University of Adelaide MOOC | Ministers' Media Centre, Australian Government

  • SKY News Live AM Agenda, discussing literacy and numeracy Home > Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham > SKY News Live AM Agenda, discussing literacy and numeracy Monday 18 January 2016 Transcript Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham Minister for Education and Training Kieran Gilbert: Let me ask you about this report on literacy and numeracy- this is by the Australian Industry Group. It’s quite a worry; 44 per cent of Australian adults not having a level of literacy and numeracy at a level considered to be the minimum to operate in the workplace. Simon Birmingham: Look, it is a real concern Kieran, and it’s certainly anecdotal feedback that I’ve received over time from many employers, and it’s why as a Government we’re focused on some of the things in education policy that we know make the most profound difference to the outcomes for students. Areas like teacher quality standards, the national curriculum, and indeed the way in which we make sure that students are best delivered the type of learning environment in the classroom. And so through the Innovation Agenda we’re investing more in making sure that the best technology, the best resources are available for teachers. Through our teacher quality reforms we are putting in place a test that will apply from this year that ensures that every single new teacher graduate around the country must be within the top 30 per cent of all Australians for their literacy and numeracy standard, because we know that we must have the best quality teachers, and teachers who are able to demonstrate their competency in literacy and numeracy to be able to pass that on to students in the future. Kieran Gilbert: But did you think it was this bad, as Education Minister? You spoke of the anecdotal feedback you’re receiving, but this sort of number is quite shocking. Simon Birmingham: Look, this type of research is quite concerning and will certainly cause me as the Minister to want to double down in terms of the work that we need to do to maintain that focus on teacher quality. To also ensure that we build a stronger narrative around parental engagement, which is also one of the key things that can improve outcomes for students from their schooling lives, that type of engagement in early years through Send Tweet Email Print reading to your children, engagement with your children through their schooling. These are critical factors that complement the hard work of our teachers in the classroom. So it’s not something that is solved by one single silver bullet; it requires a multifaceted approach to get the curriculum right, get the quality of our teachers right, ensure we have the best possible engagement from parents, and these are all pillars in the Government’s education agenda. Kieran Gilbert: Senator Simon Birmingham, Education Minister, appreciate it, we’ll chat to you soon. Thank you for that. Media Contact: media@education.gov.au
