  THE HON BOB BALDWIN MP  SHADOW MINISTER FOR TOURISM  SHADOW MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT    14 February 2013  SENATE INQUIRY SEEKS ANSWERS ON MISSING $10 BILLION  This morning’s Senate estimates hearing into tourism saw the government held to account over  Australia’s ballooning ‘tourism trade deficit’, which is rapidly approaching $10 billion per annum.    The Additional Estimates hearing follows last week’s release of the ABS official overseas arrivals and  departures figures, which have worsened considerably since Labor took office:      2007 2012 Short term arrivals  5,644,100   6,145,600  Short term departures 5,462,300 8,219,800    [Source: ABS Arrivals and Departures, 6 February 2013]1    In January 2012, the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) estimated that Australia’s tourism trade  deficit would be $8.732 billion for 2012‐13, as a result of the imbalance in the tourism market.2    The TTF has revised that figure, now estimating3 the total tourism trade deficit for this financial year  will be $9.861 billion.    The carbon tax, 21 000 new regulations and Labor’s increased tourism taxes and visa charges have  all impacted the cost and attractiveness of Australian holidays.      Labor doesn’t get tourism and has no plan to revitalise Australian tourism.      The services sector is part of the Coalition’s plan to build a more diverse, world‐class, 5‐Pillar  economy. Our plan includes abolishing the carbon tax, cutting $1 billion in red tape costs and  creating one million new jobs across the economy within five years.      Media:  Alana Kosklin (0401 350 000)    (ABS arrivals and departures graph, and TTF estimate of tourism trade deficit overleaf)  1   http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/Latestproducts/3401.0Feature%20Article1Dec%202012?opendocu ment&tabname=Summary&prodno=3401.0&issue=Dec%202012&num=&view=   

  HON BOB BALDWIN MP  Shadow Minister for Tourism  Shadow Minister for Regional Development    4 January 2012     GOVERNMENT INACTION SQUANDERING ASIAN CENTURY    The release of today’s Tourist Accommodation figures by the ABS has reopened debate about  Australia’s ability to service projected demand from China and India.    Shadow Minister for Tourism Bob Baldwin said; “The minister must realise hotel investments have  an 8‐10 year lifecycle so the time to act is now if he is serious about his Tourism 2020 targets.”    “While Tourism Australia’s marketing efforts in China have translated into increased demand, the  government has dropped the ball on the supply side,” Mr Baldwin said.    “Only 8 months after the release of the government’s Australia in the Asian Century White Paper1,  the tourism industry is expressing grave concerns we will miss out on the estimated $140 billion  overnight visitor expenditure ‘prize’.    “Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA) has today highlighted there are billions of dollars in  suitable capital overseas, and in Sydney alone we need an additional 5,000 hotel rooms in the next  10 years to realise our potential,” Mr Baldwin said.    Mr Baldwin referred to comments by (now former) Tourism Minister Nick Sherry:     “Tourism Research Australia says investment growth in tourism is lagging behind the rest of  the economy.  It’s been a struggle to reach investment growth of 2% a year which is  insufficient. The stark reality is that there has been no meaningful addition to Australia’s  accommodation supply for a decade or more…We need to see an increase in investment to  realise the potential.  The country will need between 40,000 and 70,000 additional hotel  rooms by 2020 to cope with projected demand.”    (Travel Weekly, 26 July 2011)    Mr Baldwin said that despite being identified in a report published on the Department’s website2,  the government had failed to fix, through COAG, the disincentives that apply to hotel investment.   Residential property is still easier and cheaper to build, and ongoing property fees for residential  property are still lower for residential property.    “While the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) response to the White Paper3  focused on  accelerated depreciation there are a range of things the government can do to stimulate  investment,” Mr Baldwin said.    Media:  Adam Joseph 0437 137 262
