Delivering extra support for Fremantle's neediest.

Delivering extra support for Fremantle’s neediest Federal Member for Fremantle, Melissa Parke today welcomed the Australian Government’s $267,595 boost to eight emergency relief providers in Fremantle electorate.

“We know that many people are under pressure trying to cope with the impact of the global financial crisis. More and more people are feeling the strain of keeping up with mortgage and rent payments, bills and food costs,”Ms Parke said.

“This funding boost will help community organisations such as the Fremantle Multicultural Centre and St. Patrick’s Community Support Centre to provide much-needed emergency relief in the Fremantle electorate,” Ms Parke said.

Emergency relief funding has been granted to: Wyn Carr House Women’s Refuge $4,086 • Zonta House Refuge Association Inc $4,203 • The Salvation Army Fremantle $17,318 •

City of Melville Citizens Relief Fund Inc $28,150 • St Patrick’s Community Support Centre $46,461 • UCA Fremantle Wesley Mission - Social Service $50,697 • Anglicare - Fremantle $54,509 •

Fremantle Multicultural Centre Inc $62,351 •

Community organisations in WA are reporting increased demand for emergency relief and financial counselling. New and additional client groups include middle income families, homeowners, and small business owners seeking support for the first time.

The Rudd Government’s boost doubles emergency relief funding, with an extra $80.4 million dedicated over the next two years to the provision of emergency relief and financial counselling across the nation.

Emergency relief provides people with immediate support including vouchers to cover food, transport, pharmacy and utility costs, rent and accommodation assistance and food and clothing parcels.

This funding is provided under the Australian Government’s Financial Management Program.
