Abstract This article re-examines the scientific basis of the nuclear winter hypothesis, concluding that the apocalyptic consequences argued for by proponents of the theory can in fact be relegated to a vanishingly low probability. This finding has implications for the study of the environmental effects of nuclear war. Nuclear winter is not valid as a sole basis for cuts to nuclear arsenals, but, if the debate has made the search for a political solution to the nuclear arms race more urgent, the exercise will have been worthwhile.
