Abstract The imposition of a limited degree of legal regulation on the Australian labour market has had many effects, including an opportunity to study the workings of the political, economic and cultural forces that have shaped the Australian labour market's structure. This paper exploits the visibility of the Conciliation and Arbitration Court's proceedings, to shed light on the complex set of processes responsible for the definition of women's work as unskilled.
