Senator CALVERT(4.03 p.m.)
âVery briefly, as a Liberal Tasmanian senator I, too, wish to be associated with the condolence motion moved by Senator Hill.
I met Lance Barnard after he had retired from politicsâmostly at airports when he was involved in his group training activities. But there is no doubt, as we have read and heard, that Lance Barnard was by any standard a great Tasmanian and a great Australian. So much so that, at the Liberal Party state council meeting last weekend, the State President, Bill Gatenbyâwho, tragically, died this morningâmentioned the great service that Lance Barnard had given to Tasmania. I think that to be honoured in such a way at a conference of some 350 Liberals is an indication of how Lance Barnard was regarded by the Tasmanian people.
I would like to pay tribute to the late Lance Barnard, who served his state and his country in such an unselfish and outstanding manner.
Question resolved in the affirmative, honourable senators standing in their places.
